I think Ray Bradbury uses quotes from literature that have been very influential and important throughout history. I think he wants to prove how significant books are and why it is so awful that there are firemen that have the job of burning the books. He predicts in the future more and more people will pay less attention to these books and their significance won't be acknowledged. On page 55, Bradbury talks about how Hamlet was shortened even though it was a classic by Shakespeare "But many were those whose sole knowledge of Hamlet... whose sole knowledge, as I say, of Hamlet was a one-page digest in a book that claimed: now at last you can read all the classics; keep up with your neighbors." He is making a point that even great classics like Hamlet is shortened to only one page because people don't find it necessary to read and study it. Beatty thinks that Shakespeare is insignificant "Why don't you belch Shakespeare at me you fumbling snob? 'There is no terror, Cassius, in your threats, for I am arm'd so strong in honesty that they pass me as an idle wind, which I respect not!'" (Page 119) I think Bradbury is also saying that
Shakespeare is so well-know that even the head of the firemen is knowledgeable in his work.
On page 76, Ray Bradbury talks about how the Bible might not even be considered a valuable piece of literature in the future. "How many copies of the Bible are left in this country?... How many copies of Shakespeare and Plato? None! You know as well as I do. None!" No Bibles left in the enitre country proves how little importance it has. Montag's wife gets mad at him for trying to keep the Bible because she thinks she is much more important than a book. On the last page of the book (page 165) the Bible is quoted ad Montag and the men move back toward the war damaged town. "And on either side of the river was there a tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month; And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." Montag remembers this quote from the Bible because it has meaning to him. This quote is inspiring him to want to rebuild his town. A book can have so much meaning to a person that they can connect it to their lives and let it inspire them and I think that's what Ray Bradbury is saying with this quote.
How influential books can be is another thing Bradbury mentions. On page 99, Montag reads a poem, Dover Beach, to Mildred and her friends who don't read literature and aren't familiar with much of it. "Ah, love, let us be true... Hath really neither joy, nor love, nor light... swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, where ignorant armies clas by night." After Montag finished reading the poem one of the ladies, Mr. Phelps, starting crying. I think she was so overwhlemed by the beauty and meaning of the poem because she had never heard something like that before. I think Ray Bradbury is trying to prove how much of an effect literature can have on a person. When Montag and the other firemen must burn a woman's house she refuses to leave. She quotes Latimer "'Play the man, Master Ridley; we shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.'" (Page 36) This is what Latimer said to Nicholas Ridley as they were being burnt alive. I think Bradbury is comparing being burnt alive to burning books and saying they are equally awful. The fact that the woman would rather be burnt with the books than survive also says how important they can be to a person. Books can be so meaningful and emotional and they should hold a special place in all our hearts.

A couple from Rotterdam, Donna and Ed Shappy, decided to host six baseball players of the Albany Dutchmen Baseball League during the summer. The couple is older and they thought it would be interesting and fun to host college baseball players. Donna Shappy said "“I thought, our son’s grown and out of this house and … I love to have people in. I thought it would make the summer interesting and it certainly did.” The boys come to play baseball from all different states. Two boys were from Florida and one was from Louisiana, one from Kansas, one from Arizona and one from Connecticut. For the Shappy's to allow six college boys to stay in their house is such a nice gesture and really shows that they enjoy helping others. “My husband and I are in our mid-50s, so bringing six college guys into our home definitely made life different, but it was a good different.” Denise Polsinelli explains what the host family's responibilities are "“The commitment is just to provide a home atmosphere for the boys and some meals. The team does feed them after each game but they’re going to need breakfast and lunch material.” So not only did the Shappy have to house six boys they had to feed them too! It couldn't have been easy and it must've took much effort. Polsinelli also explains that the Shappy's took an extra step "Most families take one player, some take two or three, but few take on six like the Shappys." In reward for their services the Shappy's were allowed to attend all games for free and were invited to any bonding event like a pinic or family fun day.

6.Should Memorial Day be a time to remember only veterans or all those who have died?
I think Memorial Day is a time to remember all those who have fought for our country whether they are still alive or have passed away. Just because there are soldiers who aren't alive anymore doesn't mean there is any less reason to honor what they did for us. They have done just as much as the veterans still alive today. The soldiers who died during the war aren't as fortunate as the soldiers who were able to survive through the war. All the soliders are the reason why we live in such an amazing country and why we all have freedoms. It's important to honor and remember every single man and woman who have risked their own life for every person in the United States. In times of war these men and women have stepped up to serve our country even if it meant that they might not survive. It is an honor to be a soldier and each one should be recognized and remembered for what they have done. Memorial Day should be a time to realize how fortunate we are to live in America and be able to have freedom. We wouldn't be living the way we are today if it weren't for the soldiers who have fought for our freedom and our rights. I consider myself and every other person living in this country exremely fortunate and I thank the people who have made this possible for us today.

What is Crippling Us?
John Taylor Gatto presents his opinion on how public education cripples children by telling his experiences with education. He is a retired school teacher, and was once a student in school himself, so he has had much experience with children in the classroom, both his peers and students of his. Gatto explains how children have become so uninterested in school and how they don't seem to care about it. In his article Against School he says "They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around." School has become so boring for kids and even for their teachers. Gatto shares his experience of being a teacher "Boredom is the common condition of schoolteachers, and anyone who has spent time in a teachers' lounge can vouch for the low energy, the whining, the dispirited attitudes, to be found there. When asked why they feel bored, the teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect." He also thinks that the way children are taught in school isn't as effective and there are other ways to learn. "...six classes a day, five days a week, nine months a year, for twelve years. Is this deadly routine really necessary?" This is how children get bored because they spend so much time sitting in a desk. Gatto doesn't think it's necessary to be in school for so long and kids can get an education in better ways.

Ray Bradbury presents his thoughts in this science-fiction novel and creates a story of what he believes might become of the future. On page 54 he says "Classics cut to fit fifteen-minute radio shows, then cut again to fill a two-mintue book column, winding up at last as a ten- or twelve-line dictionary resume." Bradbury seems to believe that in the future no one will want to relax and take their time. Everything will be rushed and fast-paced. No time to slow down or sit and talk or think and have time to yourself. "Speed up the film, Montag, quick. Click, Pic, Look, Eye, Now, Flick, Here, There, Swift, Pace, Up, Down, In, Out, Why, How, Who, What, Where, Eh? Uh! Bang! Smack! Wallop, Bing, Bong, Boom!... Whirl man's mind around about so fast under the pumping hands of publishers, exploiters, broadcasters that centrifuge flings off all unnecessary time-wasting thought!" (Page 55). Bradbury even goes to extremes and describes bilboards that have to be stretched out so people can read them because they're driving so fast to get somewhere.

No one even has to the patience to wait. Everyone wants something at the press of a button. I can relate to this because I never feel like I have any free time. I'm always going to school or rushing to finish homework before or after practice or going from one practice to the next or to a party or an event. Adults are even more of a rush getting to work, leaving work to pick up kids it never ends! Gatto is right that kids have trouble sitting in school for six hours a day without getting bored. When you're sitting in a class taking notes for an hour and twenty minutes it's hard not to get distracted. I think both of their opinions are accurate predictions of the future. There won't be much time to slow down and relax and certain things will probably change because of this like public education.

In order to succeed in life you have to fail at some point. J.K. Rowling knows that failure is an important part of success. "On this wonderful day when we are gathered together to celebrate your academic success, I have decided to talk to you about the benefits of failure." Some people might question this and wonder how in the world failure can help you succeed. Failure can push you to succeed, to be better and to over come your mistakes and misfortunes. "You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success." Many people are afriad of failure and so was J.K. Rowling "What I feared most for myself at your age was not poverty, but failure." I believe that you can't fear failure because then you will never be able to achieve your goals because you're too scared of dissapointment. Instead of fearing failure you should accept it. Accept that it is a part of life and let it be the force propelling you to be successful.
Everyone experiences failure at some point in their lives, famous people, professional athletes, even people who have graduated from Yale or Harvard. Conan O'brien said in his commencement speech at Dartmouth University " But today I tell you that whether you fear it or not, disappointment will come. The beauty is that through disappointment you can gain clarity, and with clarity comes conviction and true originality." J.K. Rowling shared her experience with failure in her speech "Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea then how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality."
You may experience failure early in life, J.K. Rowling said "I am not dull enough to suppose that because you are young, gifted and well-educated, you have never known hardship or heartbreak." That failure that you experience can be life changing. It can make you see the world in a new way. For J.K. Rowling failure meant courage. " I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had been realised, and I was still alive." No one is perfect. Perfect is boring. If we were all perfect what would we have to live for? Our failures are what make us who we are. The type of person you are is how you respond to failure, whether you let it tear you down or make you a new person. 98. Just When I Think I Am Done
Lately it seems as if every time I finally accomplish something, I realize I have another thing to do. I've been so stressed out from soccer, lacrosse, school and homework it feels like that's all I'm ever doing and I never get time to relax anymore! I also don't much sleep. It's a rare occasion when I get to bed before 11 p.m. on school nights. The only days I don't have soccer, lacrosse or school are Sundays which I spend doing homework and trying ot catch up on sleep. This sounds like a lot of complaining but I really just need a break from it all! When I'm done with school, I have a lacrosse game and when I think I finally get to go home I realize I have soccer practice after that. Just when I think I'm done with tests for the week another teacher schedules one or assigns an essay or a project. Just when I think I can finally sleep in on the weekend I find out I have a soccer game on Saturday in Long Island, four hours away. Just when I think I can finally go to bed I have to stay up to write letters to college coaches for my soccer tournament the next weekend. It never ends. The only break I get is when regents week is over in June, and just when I think I am done, my break ends and school soccer starts in August.

These people are celebrating because they just got to their hotel in the Bahamas! They won a paid vacation to an island of their choice and they couldn't be more exicited because none of them have been on a vacation in the past five years! One of the men heard that the game show, Jeopardy, was offering a prize pf a free vacation to any island you wanted! The man sent in a registration form to get on the show and he had to give a reason for why him, his wife, his brother and her wife all deserved a relaxing two week vacation. He explained how his wife lost her job a few years ago and how it has been hard on them. She has a new job at a local clothing store but it doesn't pay much. Last year they had to give away their dog because they couldn't afford it. His brother's wife was dealing with the loss of her father and it has been a tough year for all of them. A vacation would mean the world to them. His application was a good enough reason to get them on the show. They ended up winning the game and the vacation they had always dreamed of!

Philosophy
Naturalism: Naturalism is the belief that nothing exists beyond the laws of nature and the natural universe. It also states that, if anything does exsist beyond nature, it does not have any affect on the natural world. Followers also don't believe in ghosts or spirits. Paul Kurtz argues that nature can be understood by the main materials of mass, energy and physical and chemical properties. The first ideas of naturalism appeared in the works of pre-Socratic philosophers. The principles and investigations of these philosophers is very similar to naturalism. Thales, who was one of these early philosophers, was considered to be the father of science. I don't agree with the main ideas of this philosophy because we have no proof that there is nothing beyond nature. I believe that God created nature and that there is more to life than the basic elements of nature even if it is beyond what we can see. I don't necessarily believe in ghosts but I believe that when a loved one dies, in a way they are watching over us. If someone survives a car crash when it seemed to be close to impossible, maybe there was someone, somewhere watching over them and protecting them. I think that maybe there is more than just "getting lucky" and that there is a reason for things happening the way they do. Maybe the things that exist beyond nature do affect us and we just don't realize it.

A Surprise for Mom
Dad and I love to walk down into the village together during the summer. On a boiling hot day we love to stop at the local ice cream shop and get home made vanilla ice cream from our good friend Jerry. We always sit outside at the front tables and watch the cars drive through the village. We play a game to see who can spot the most yellow cars. I'm usually the winner of that game since dad's eyesight isn't very keen.
A couple of weeks ago dad and I headed doen to the village to buy mom a birthday gift. We went to the pottery store and got her a few nice mugs and cups because she loves to drink her tea. It was such a nice day out so we decided to take the long way home. While on our walk we saw a man from far away with a big brown box next to him on the street. People were huddled around him to get a good look at what was inside. I ran ahead of dad so I could find out for myself. I ran up to the group of people and looked inside at adorable little brown puppies!
The look on my face must've gave away how excited I was because the man started laughing. He told me they were "beautiful 14 week old puppies, born on January 13, 2012." He also told me they were ready to take home for anyone who wanted to purchase one! When my dad saw the puppies a huge smile crossed his face. He grew up on a farm and had many dogs so he loves them. I've always wanted one but mom was never very interested in getting one. I looked at my dad with the best puppy dog eyes I had and begged him to let us get one. They were so cute and the man told us "They are playful, love the outdoors, paper trained and have healthy diets." It took a little convincing but after about ten minutes and when I was close to tears my dad finally gave in.
I was so excited that I finally had my own puppy! I couldn't wait to get home to show mom! When we got home she was outside gardening. She greeted us with a big wave then stopped when she saw the puppy in dad's hands. She looked confused and surprised as I sprinted up to her. I told her we bought a puppy! Her face went pale. I calmed her down though, I told her the man had said that "The Bordeaux is a wonderful family pet; great company for children and loyal to their owners." Mom tried to act calm but I could tell she was a little shaken up. Dad asked if she wanted to hold her but mom said she would later.
Dad and I took the puppy inside and let her walk around a little to become familiar with her new home. We were trying to decide on a nice name for her. We thought of a bunch, Rosie, Bailey, Bud, Lilly, but none of them sounded just right for her. Mom just watched the puppy from a distance but then suggested the name Hollie. Dad and I smiled. Hollie was the perfect name for our new puppy. At first mom wouldn't even touch Hollie. She stayed clear of her except for cleaning up Hollie's messes. I tried to get mom to come outside and play with us but she said she would rather just watch us and drink her tea.
Two weeks went by and mom still hadn't shown any interest in Hollie. Dad and I were walking into town but we left Hollie behind with mom. He told me if mom didn't want to keep Hollie we were going to have to bring her back. I was heartbroken. I couldn't believe this was really happening. Dad said we would give it another week or two but that's it. After that I prepared to say my goodbye's to Hollie because it didn't look like I was going to keep her.
The next morning I woke up early when I heard clapping and laughter from downstairs. I went down to see what was going on and I was in awe. Mom was laughing and smiling watching Hollie play with her toy.
"Look honey! She can roll over and she tries to chase her tail!" Dad came in from outside and asked what all the commotion was. I told him I guess we get to keep Hollie afterall.

He also told me they were ready to take home for anyone who wanted to purchase one! When my dad saw the puppies a huge smile crossed his face. He grew up on a farm and had many dogs so he loves them. I've always wanted one but mom was never very interested in getting one. I looked at my dad with the best puppy dog eyes I had and begged him to let us get one. They were so cute and the man told us "They are playful, love the outdoors, paper trained and have healthy diets." It took a little convincing but after about ten minutes and when I was close to tears my dad finally gave in.
I was so excited that I finally had my own puppy! I couldn't wait to get home to show mom! When we got home she was outside gardening. She greeted us with a big wave then stopped when she saw the puppy in dad's hands. She looked confused and surprised as I sprinted up to her. I told her we bought a puppy! Her face went pale. I calmed her down though, I told her the man had said that "The Bordeaux is a wonderful family pet; great company for children and loyal to their owners." Mom tried to act calm but I could tell she was a little shaken up. Dad asked if she wanted to hold her but mom said she would later.
Dad and I took the puppy inside and let her walk around a little to become familiar with her new home. We were trying to decide on a nice name for her. We thought of a bunch, Rosie, Bailey, Bud, Lilly, but none of them sounded just right for her. Mom just watched the puppy from a distance but then suggested the name Hollie. Dad and I smiled. Hollie was the perfect name for our new puppy. At first mom wouldn't even touch Hollie. She stayed clear of her except for cleaning up Hollie's messes. I tried to get mom to come outside and play with us but she said she would rather just watch us and drink her tea.
Two weeks went by and mom still hadn't shown any interest in Hollie. Dad and I were walking into town but we left Hollie behind with mom. He told me if mom didn't want to keep Hollie we were going to have to bring her back. I was heartbroken. I couldn't believe this was really happening. Dad said we would give it another week or two but that's it. After that I prepared to say my goodbye's to Hollie because it didn't look like I was going to keep her.
The next morning I woke up early when I heard clapping and laughter from downstairs. I went down to see what was going on and I was in awe. Mom was laughing and smiling watching Hollie play with her toy.
"Look honey! She can roll over and she tries to chase her tail!" Dad came in from outside and asked what all the commotion was. I told him I guess we get to keep Hollie afterall.

You will need about 8 legs and 8
bodies of the squid. I buy squid that is already cleaned and the tentacle
(legs) and bodies are separated. Squid that is already cleaned and dressed
can be found at most supermarkets. Some packages may have more legs than
bodies or vice versa. Wash squid and pat dry. Then coat with egg and dip in
flour, sprinkle with seasonings. Pour oil in frying pan on medium-high and
let it get hot before putting squid in. Be careful of splatters from oil. Fry
until golden brown and sprinkle each piece with lemon juice. Makes 6 to 8
Servings.

1/2 Lb. Squid, Cleaned and Dressed: I remember when my
family ordered kalamari at a restaurant and my sisters didn't know what it
was. The look on their faces was absolutely priceless when they found out it
was squid and they were couldn't believe my parents and i were actually eating
it! They still haven't tried kalamari no matter how many times we order it.

Salt & Pepper to Taste: Whenever I help my mom cook food for
thanksgiving and other holidays she always lets me be the last taste-tester.
She always wants my opinion about whether there is enough salt and pepper or if
there is too much. I love helping her in the kitchen and especially tasting all
her delicious food!

Garlic Salt or Garlic Powder to Taste: My mom is obsessed with getting
all sorts of crazy kitchen gadgets and one time she brought home a garlic
chopper that made it really fast and easy to cut garlic and onions. My sisters
tried it out and it didn't work very well. Of course they managed to break it.
My mom was really upset that it didn't work out very well but we did end up
being able to fix it. We haven't used that garlic chopper in a long time.

1 Egg, Beaten: I remember wondering why my mom's scrambled
eggs always tasted so much better than the kind they give you at restaurants
and hotels. She told me that she put a secret ingredient in them and
that's what made them taste a lot better. She showed me how to make
them and then add in cheese before they're done cooking and it gives them
so much more flavor. I was so excited and I liked it so much so now I make
scrambled eggs for myself all the time.

1/2 to 1 Cup Flour: A couple years ago when we were making an apple pie
for thanksgiving dessert my sister Sara's job was to put flour on the kitchen
counter so we could roll out the dough so it wouldn't stick. She thought it
would be fun to sprinkle the flour all around the counter very nicely but she
started to get a little too crazy with it. She got flour in everyones hair and
all over the kitchen. We laughed about it but my mom wasn't too happy when she
was cleaning up the mess.

3/4 Cup Olive Oil: Once when my family went out to eat at an
Italian restaurant the waitor gave us oil with vinegar to dip the bread
in. This was the first time my sisters had seen that before and they fell in
love with it. They made my mom go out and buy our own oil and vinegar to eat
with our bread whenever we wanted at home. Now every time we have Italian
dinners at home we eat our bread with oil and vinegar!
· Lemon Juice: My mom
and I love mexican food and we make it all the time- fajitas, tacos, salsa we
love it all! She loves finding new recipes to make and once she found
a new recipe for salsa that sounded really good so we wanted to try it out.
Everything went well and it was tasting fine until we put in the lemon juice at
the end. We were so excited to taste our new salsa but it was so sour! We
couldn't eat it after that but the next time we made it we were extra careful
not to put too much. It ended up tasting amazing

This nursery rhyme is relevant to my life because when I was in elementary school I used to have to stay after for Y-time because my parents worked. A couple of my bestfriends and I would always go exploring near the woods around the playground. One day we found a big dirt area with tons of ant holes and hundreds of big black ants! Back then we didn't find bugs gross at all and we were so amazed by them. Everyday during Y-time we would run over to our spot by the playground and watch the ants as they ran around along the dirt. We would even pick them up and try to build our own homes for them although it didn't always work. This was where we would spend most of our time. Watching the ants fascinated us so much. It seems weird to think that I could be so intrigued by them when I was younger and now I absolutely hate bugs.

Gina Peca describes herself as "...a 52 year old stay at home mom who is trying to find my way back into the “real” world." She keeps busy by caring for her two sons and running a cancer foundation in memory of her daughter and she is a wife of a man battling a brain tumor. "Like most parents, my husband and I have juggled soccer tournaments, basketball games, baseball games, ski club, school activities, volleyball practice and family trips." She clearly has a lot going on in her life and has also gone through some tragic events. The Catie Hoch Foundation is the foundation that was established for her daughter before she died. Gina is very devoted to this foundation and supporting anyone else who may be going through the same thing with their loved ones. On her blog I read an article about a little girl who recently passed away that was battling the same type of cancer as her daughter Catie. The author can relate to the parents of the girl, Ila Jean, because she lost her daughter 11 years ago. "I want to say to them, right now your mind may be playing an endless loop of her last days and you may think you will never feel joy again. But somewhere down the road, and no one knows how long it will take, you will feel happiness." She tries to give hope to these parents and says that one day "...you will wake up and not feel that weight pressing against your chest." Gina send strength to this family because she knows just how much they need it at this time. "The next part of their journey is not an easy one." She tells them to be grateful for everything they do have which is exactly what Gina does. She is living a "roller coaster of a life" and is slowly getting back into the swing of things by blogging and hoping to help other people as well as overcome her stuggles.

Did you have a favorite blanket or toy? Tell about it.
On my first birthday I got my most favorite gift that I still have today. The gift was a big stuffed teddy bear from my parents. I couldn't say much at that age, but once I started to talk a little more bear was one of the few words I knew, so I named my stuffed teddy Bearbear! Once I got Bearbear he never left my side no matter where I went or what I was doing. We ate together, slept together, played outside, did arts and crafts, played hide and seek, took naps, etc. Bearbear was my best friend. I was never lonely with Bearbear around and he kept me company until my sisters were born but even after they were born Bearbear was still with me constantly. Even as I got older he was never forgotten. I started giving my old toys and stuffed animals away and every time I thought maybe it was time to let Bearbear go I just couldn't. A part of me couldn't let go of him. I gave away all my stuffed dogs, my other teddy bears, cats, bunnies, everything except Bearbear. It seemed like he was a part of me now and I didn't want to find out if I would be okay without him or not. I decided I would keep him but maybe it was time to put him in the closet instead of sleeping on my bed with him. I kept him in a safe place and I knew he was there but it just wasn't the same. After a few weeks I gave up and decided I didn;t care how old I was or what anyone thought about Bearbear. So he came back out of the closet and he has been sleeping in my bed with me every night ever since.

J= Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville
Jimmy Buffett's Maragaritaville is one of the best restaurants I have eaten at. There aren't many restaurants located in the northeast but if you're ever traveling south there is one in Myrtle Beach (the one I went to), Nashville, Florida, New Orleans, Arizona, and a few other locations out west. Margaritaville has a great family environment. The restaurant is so upbeat and fun with its tropical setting. Right in the center of the restaurant is a humungous statue of a margarita! The last time I went there was a parrot outside! They have live music playing every night of the week and on a rare occasion you might see Jimmy Buffett himself! They even have a gift shop in another part of the restaurant with Jimmy Buffett souvenirs. The service there is always friendly and entertaining. The restaurant in Myrtle Beach is located in the perfect spot; right at the center of Broadway at the Beach with shopping, rides and plenty of other attractions. The menu includes plenty of delicious burgers, sandwiches, chicken, shrimp and tons of other seafood. The meals are reasonably priced with burgers and sandwiches around $12 and seafood and steak around $20. I would definately reccomend going to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for a night of entertainment, great food and great music!

The Book that Changed My Life
The book that changed my life is A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer. This book is an autobiography about a boy (Dave Pelzer) who was brutally abused as a child. I think the reason this book is so powerful and inspiring is because it's an autobiography. The author is telling us his story from his point of view and that makes the experience so real. Reading him describe how he was so badly abused throughout his childhood was heartbreaking. I just couldn't believe what I was reading. I couldn't imagine any parent would be cruel enough to torture their child over and over again to the point where they are near death. The author doesn't hold back anything. He describes in detail the pain of being beaten and starved by his alcoholic mother. Some of the suffering she put him through brought me to tears. At some parts it was almost too much for me to handle just reading about the misery he had to deal with every single minute of every single day. It seems unbearable for a child to live like that and put up with such horrible torment. I can't understand why or how a mother could ever harm her own child to the point where she sees them as just an "it". Reading Dave Pelzer's book made take a minute to stop and think about how fortunate I really am. Not only that but also made me realize that child abuse is a real and horrible thing, that it does happen, probably more often than we think. This book took me away from my happy life and made me look through someone else's eyes. There are so many horrid and terrible things that happen in this world that most people don't even notice. We live in a world with so many faults and tragedies and reading Dave Pelzer's story broke my heart in more ways than one. I am thankful for everything I've been blessed with and I can only hope and pray for anyone who is suffering in this world. I will never forget A Child Called "It".
